In today’s world of cutting-edge technology and trendy training methodologies, it’s easy to assume that experiential learning is a modern invention. But what if I told you its roots stretch back thousands of years to ancient India?
The Gurukul system, prevalent in ancient India, was a revolutionary approach to education, emphasising on transformative learning. Gurus (teachers) didn’t confine their students to classrooms; they immersed them in nature, believing that the wilderness itself was the greatest teacher.
Young students, even princes, left the comforts of their homes to live with their Gurus. This wasn’t about hardship; it was about holistic development. They learned not just from books, but from direct experience, cultivating their body, mind, and spirit.
Imagine this: a Guru doesn’t lecture on problem-solving; he presents a real-world challenge. ‘We have no food today,’ he might say. ‘Your task is to gather edible plants, collect firewood, and prepare a meal.’
This is learning by doing at its finest. It’s not about theory first, then practice. It’s about practice leading to theory. And at the heart of it all was reflection.
The Guru would guide students through a process of debriefing:
‘How was your experience?’
‘What challenges did you face?’
‘How did you overcome them?’
‘What did you learn?’
‘How will this help you in the future?’
Fast forward to today, and our education system often feels like a one-way download of information. We’re drowning in data, yet starving for wisdom.
